Building regulations Part L1a
Part L1A was originally written in 2002 asking for 25% of all fixed light fitting to be dedicated low energy fittings, in 2006 it has been re-written to increase this level to one in four fixed light fittings.
The chosen light source for low energy fittings is compact fluorescent, which offer high luminous efficacy, good colour reproduction at several colour temperatures, dimmable versions and extended lamp life.
The term dedicated refers to the type of lamp base used within the light fitting. The document clearly states that the fitting must only be capable of accepting lamps having a luminous efficacy greater than 40 lumens per circuit watt (lm/W). There are many types of lamps that would comply and are freely available to manufacturers.
All compliant lamps are controlled with high frequency ballasts the combination results in a high efficacy unrivaled by other light sources.
